Let us hear from you! A Personal Message from Larry James: Happy New Year! Here are a few ideas to consider when making resolutions: 1. Set realistic resolutions. It is not wise to resolve to run a marathon if you've never jogged around the block. 2. Take a stand for your resolutions. Endorse resolutions you know you can get excited about; make them your own. Never make a resolution because you think someone else wants you to. 3. Take baby steps. Incremental goals work best. Instead of resolving to shed 60 pounds, go for 10. When you reach that goal, set another. 4. Make a written plan. Be specific as to what you want, then set a deadline. When you reach your goal, reward yourself. 5. Develop a support network. Tell a trusted friend what your intentions are; someone who will encourage you to continue and complete your goal. 6. Reward yourself. A periodic pat on the back (when you deserve it) as you accomplish your resolves will keep you motivated. 7. Think: Long term. Everyone slips up once-in-awhile. Resolutions are goals, not rigid absolutes. If you slip, don't call it off, recommit. Dust yourself off and get going again. P.S. Make yourself better than you ever thought you could be and you will find the relationship you have with your love partner getting better. This works especially well when two people are focusing on working on themselves; together. Then, the relationship you have with the one you love can only grow and prosper. Only selfish people think only of themselves. When you really love yourself you cannot help wanting to give some of your love away. Other people have a need to be loved. So do you. People are like that. Like attracts like. What you become you attract. Want a great love partner? Become a great love partner! Work on this one. Sharing love with someone else must only and always begin with you. Learn to relate to yourself better. To allow yourself a time of healing, a time to get to know you, is a wonderful gift; the same gift of love that now presents the challenge to step into the future, without holding on to the past. It is the first step you take while you are still afraid. It requires letting go of the need to be in a relationship and mastering the fear that keeps you from taking the first step to the next relationship; the singles' rite of passage. The reluctance to experience this ritual may come from a lack of conversations that construct the mutual commitment necessary to honor each other's right to be alone while you are together. A new freedom waits to be discovered; the freedom to be who you really are with the one you love.
