Recognizing a Gambling Addiction
Larry James
Today, the opportunity to gamble is almost everywhere - on the Internet, in the casinos - and gambling addiction is on the rise. Here are a
few tell-tale signs of a gambling addiction.
- Not planning to gamble but just "showing up" to gamble then gambling until the last dollar is gone.
- Gambling in secret.
- Skipping family dinners and get-togethers or work engagements to gamble.
- Gambling when you feel "down" or when you feel like celebrating.
- Feeling shame or remorse after gambling and repeatedly vowing to quit. You may even quit or slow down for a while and the begin again.
- Lying, stealing, borrowing or selling things to get gambling money.
- Gambling with money you need to pay bills or solve financial problems.
- Continuing to gamble when you lose in and effort to win back your loses. When you win, you gamble to win more rather than walk away with the money.
You dream of "winning BIG!"
The consequences of a gambling addiction, to yourself, your family and your pocketbook, can be devastating.
If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, contact the National Center on Problem Gambling toll-free: 800-522-4700 or go to
