Home Something NEW: Romantic Wedding Ceremonies |
The Intimate EnemyIn this part of the book, and all those that have preceded it, we have raised and discussed many new ideas that you may have never considered before. Higher ideas such as these do not become your life's helpful partner just by reading them. It doesn't work that way. As everything in this book proclaims, you must learn the truth of them from yourself. If they are to come alive for you it must occur within you and through your own life experience. This is why so many inner exercises have been provided for you. Each one provides you with a whole new way to "know thyself" - revealing new opportunities one after another to discover for yourself whether the facts about your life and the intimate enemy are indeed as they've been described over the course of these last nine chapters. Perhaps the main idea connected to your self investigation is that something lives within you that calls itself your friend, counselor, and guide. It speaks with your voice and you "hear" it say with your own ears that it is who you are. But in fact this self is not you. It is nothing more than a collection of conditioned responses and mechanical reactions, some of which came with this machinery called your body, and some learned through life's many divergent experiences. We have called this collection that constitutes your false self "the intimate enemy." Like any collection, the intimate enemy is a bundle of fragments, each of which is incomplete. This psychic nature doesn't even speak with a single voice, but through a number of "selves" that have developed over time to deal with different types of situations. We've called each of these incomplete "selves" the Temporary Person in Charge, or TPIC: A momentary self, itself but a creation of the moment which produces the conditions for its brief appearance. It is not that this newly revealed false nature serves no purpose at all. In fact, far from being harmful, certain of its aspects are natural and necessary for our own practical interaction with the physical world. In certain respects this false nature is similar to Freud's concept of the ego. Freud looked upon the ego as a complex mechanical structure (although he likened it to a callous) that developed at the interface between the self and the physical world. He considered that the ego was really formulated to be a servant to the self. The problem with this false self, that makes it the intimate enemy, is that it has taken control of the self! Instead of being a good servant, it becomes master. And a bad one at that! And in the darkness of this unconscious reversal of Reality is induced a kind of psychic slumber in which the real conscious self, like the Sleeping Beauty in the fairy tale, drowses behind a wall of thorns. The servants have taken control of kingdom and castle, while the true monarch remains unknown. This is our actual condition: cut off from real life lying just beyond the obscuring wall of self. The point of our self investigation and inner work is to rouse the sleeping monarch latent in each of us so it can take rightful control. "But," you may well ask, "who is it who does this inner work?" Fortunately, in some people, there exist a few right servants who sense there's no future for them in the craziness of the kingdom and castle where they find themselves living. They throw their lot in with the sleeping monarch whom they labor to awaken. Most likely it's one of these right and loyal servants in you who is reading this book right now and who, encouraged by these reinforcing facts is inspired anew to continue with his or her sacred effort. When the true monarch awakens, that right servant will be rewarded, for this act of conscious self-sacrifice has granted him or her a whole new life - a real life - the rightful life.
